Artemisinin is the active ingredient of Sweet Wormwood (Artemisia annua). Many years ago, it was already used to cure malaria in China. The basis of its effect is that it initiates programmed cell death in all cells with an unusually high iron content (malarial cells infected with this virus has a much higher iron content than healthy cells).
